UN Resident Coordinator Visits JP RWEE Programme Sites in Nepal’s Madhesh Province
In October, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nepal, Ms Lila Pieters Yahia, visited JP RWEE programme sites in Laxmipur Patari Rural Municipality, Siraha District, Madhesh Province, Nepal, accompanied by representatives from UN Women, FAO, IFAD, and WFP, including Heads and Deputy Heads of Agencies and technical colleagues. Lila Pieters Yahia assumed her role as UN Resident Coordinator in Nepal in February 2026.
The mission began with an engagement with local government representatives and policymakers to discuss local development priorities and challenges. Discussions highlighted the importance of localizing climate action and agricultural development efforts, strengthening women's labour force participation, and ensuring women's meaningful participation in decision-making processes. The exchange also underscored the critical role of local governments in advancing inclusive and climate-resilient development.
The UN Resident Coordinator and UN delegation subsequently visited a climate-resilient agriculture demonstration plot, where women farmers showcased improved paddy and vegetable cultivation practices. Through direct interaction with lead farmers, the delegation learned about the techniques being adopted to improve productivity, manage climate risks, and enhance food security. Discussions also explored access to agricultural extension services, credit and finance, family support systems, and the ways in which participation in JP RWEE has contributed to improved livelihoods and resilience.
The visit continued with an interaction with women farmers and entrepreneurs, providing an opportunity to observe a range of locally produced products, including nutrition packages, pickles, bangles, pouches, and other handmade items. Women participants shared their experiences of joining producer groups, accessing finance, starting or expanding agro-based enterprises, and creating local employment opportunities. The discussion also focused on future plans for expanding farming and enterprise activities, as well as the support needed to sustain and scale their economic initiatives.
The mission provided valuable insights into how integrated investments in women's economic empowerment, climate-resilient agriculture, entrepreneurship, and local governance are helping rural women in Nepal's Madhesh Province strengthen their livelihoods, exercise greater agency, and contribute to more resilient and inclusive local economies.
